The Cornish Ground Bear

It is no secret that bears have a legendary sweet tooth, and a bustling beehive is pretty much the ultimate buffet. For beekeepers in bear country, protecting those precious frames of golden honey means getting creative, staying sharp, and putting some serious defenses in place!

From surrounding apiaries with buzzing electric fences that deliver a shocking "keep out" message, to heavy-duty bear-proof boxes built like miniature fortresses, beekeepers go to great lengths to outsmart these hungry giants. Some folks turn the surrounding area into an absolute obstacle course using motion-activated sprinklers, thorny thickets, or even strong-smelling deterrents to keep curious noses at bay, plus lets not forget red LED eyes.

Of course, bears are ridiculously clever, and no single trick works forever. That is why the best defense is usually a combination of physical barriers, clever deterrents, and a lot of vigilance. Now, around our neck of the woods, I have heard whispers of our local "Cornish Ground Bears" wreaking havoc on a hive or two to get to the honey... though thankfully, sightings of these formidable local creatures remain exceptionally rare!
